I also liked the beginning bit where he says you generally can't understand something until you have "assimilated it in an instinctive and empirical way".
You need that muscle memory, even for intellectual subjects. Although obviously focused on his daughter, "The Martian's Daughter" provides additional interesting insights into his life.
What continually amazes me was his capacity to navigate large scale organizations and bureaucracy to achieve his objectives. He was the youngest lecturers to be appointed at the University of Berlin where he worked from to and taught at Hamburg from to Von Neumann even studied under the great mathematician David Hilbert at Göttingen and was already an academic celebrity.
Von Neumann went on to become a visiting professor and then a permanent professor at Princeton where he taught mathematics and physics. He was notorious for dashing out equations on a small portion of the available blackboard and erasing expressions before students could copy them.
But there was a contrast that in his Physics teaching where people felt he was clearly able to flesh out complex ideas and make them simple.
Through these long parties, von Neumann made friends in many fields and got his hands dirty in many fields like representation theory and ergodic theory which gave him ideas about to give birth to game theory.
Early in his work, a paper on the minimax property led him to develop ideas which culminated later in one of his most original creations, the theory of games.
Memory is only one facet of intelligence, as is speed of computation. Let me introduce an additional premise: OP should GTFO. The only one that could compare is Gauss.
He thought economists were dumb, so that's a point in his favor. He thought Samuelson was dumb, not all economists. You've obviously never read The Theory of Games and Economic Behavior.

At first, only one tooth grabs upon rotation, and if the cylinder is moved a step forward, two teeth grab, and then three, until all ten grab when the cylinder is shifted the full length of the axis.
With a set of several cylinders, it is possible to generate decimal numbers of several places by shifting the cylinder until the number of teeth corresponding to the number, grabs for each decimal place , and these can be repeatedly fed into the adding mechanism.
If the entire cylinder system is shifted one or two positions forward, the machine adds the sum 10 times, or times, and so multiplication can be accomplish by means of repeated addition.
Division, through a similar process, is equivalent to repeated subtraction. For a manual calculating machine, where a person is required to turn the crank, a higher system of numeration is more practical; for example, the decimal system.
Some years after Babbage, in , Konrad Zuse, an engineer, had the idea of producing a calculating machine which was conceptually similar to that of Babbage, in that it was programmable.
He presented his idea in two patented designs on April 11, , and July 3, , and between and , he built a number of machines which he named Z1, Z2, Z3, and Z4.
This went hand in hand with the use of the logical basic functions AND, OR, and Negation, to carry out the steps of calculation as well as to display the floating decimal point.
In his patent applications, Zuse mentions the possibility of storing the calculating plan in a working memory, but this was impossible to achieve practically at that time.
In , he obtained a contract from the Aviation Testing Facility Versuchsanstalt fuer Luftfahrt to build the Z3. It was completed in , and had a dual calculating mechanism consisting of relays, and a memory of 1, relays for 62 numbers at 22 dual positions each.
A multiplication or division, or the calculation of a square root, took three seconds. The Z3 was about the size of a large walk-in closet.
Three years later, in August , in the United States, the MARK I of Howard H. Aiken was put into operation. This program-controlled calculator weighed 35 tons.
It still worked with the decimal system and fixed points for decimals. Bibcode : AmJPh.. Studies in History and Philosophy of Science Part B: Studies in History and Philosophy of Modern Physics.

Champernowne , who provided a verbal and economic commentary on the English translation of von Neumann's article. Von Neumann's hypothesis implied that every economic process used a positive amount of every economic good.
Weaker "irreducibility" conditions were given by David Gale and by John Kemeny , Morgenstern, and Gerald L. Thompson in the s and then by Stephen M.
